A Guide to the British Council 90th Anniversary Research Fellowship

To celebrate the 90th Anniversary, the British council has announced a Research fellowship Program. This fellowship is in partnership with the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) at the University of Edinburgh. The British council announced the fellowship on its official website. The program is accepting applications from prospective applicants. 

The British council is working in different countries around the world for education. It is actively involved in testing services such as IELTS exams, and often provides scholarships to students. Some of the popular programs of the British council include Fully funded scholarship for students in STEM, Commonwealth scholarships,GREAT Scholarship and Charles Wallace Visiting Fellowship Programme.

Eligibility Criteria for British Council Research Fellowship

Above all, it is essential to check if you are eligible to apply. So let’s get into details of criteria for the fellowship program.

  • Applicants must be based in an ODA-recipient country where the British Council operates 
  • Be qualified to undertake postdoctoral level research for this early career Fellowship, meaning they must have a PhD, completed within the last seven years (factoring in career breaks, e.g. periods of parental leave or time away from academia).

Research topics should be relevant to the areas of priority across Arts, Education and the English language that are outlined in our strategy, and to areas of cross-cutting strategic British Council interest such as international relations and soft power, international development and peace building, and cultural relations and cultural diplomacy.

Application deadline 

The last date to apply for the British Council 90th Anniversary research fellowship program (for visits from January 2025) is 23:59 BST on 26 July 2024.

The results will be communicated in September. 

How to apply for the British Council Research Fellowship?

The prospective applicants can submit their application through online application form. Registration is not required for this application. It is an open application. 

The application includes personal, professional, and academic information and some questions regarding your research. You need to submit following documents for fellowship:

  • Application form (online form)
  • Minimum of two and a maximum of three confidential references
  • Cover letter outlining how the Fellowship will support the British Council’s objectives for this programme
  • Referees’ email addresses
  • Deadline for referees to email their references to the Director at iash@ed.ac.uk by 26 July 2024
