The Al Jazeera Fellowship Program is accepting applications. It is a unique program for journalists and researchers who are interested in exploring various aspects of journalism and media in the Global south. The program aims to contribute to the development of high-quality journalism. It encourages innovation and research, enriches journalistic content, and provides an immersive experience within the Al Jazeera Media Network (AJMN).
The program consists of two phases:
- The first one is completed remotely, where the fellows work on their research plan and introduction;
- Second one is completed at the AJMN headquarters, where the fellows continue their research and write a 7,000-word paper on a selected topic.
The program also offers access to resources, guidance, and support from AJMN staff and experts.
Al Jazeera fellowship theme
The theme for the 2024 Al Jazeera Fellowship is artificial intelligence and its applications in journalism, such as data journalism, fact-checking, misinformation, ethics, and more.
Eligibility Criteria
- The program is open to full-time journalists and researchers with a background in media or social sciences,
- Bachelor’s degree, at least two years of work experience, strong writing and research skills, Fluency in Arabic and English.
Depending on the program you choose, you may also need to have some language skills. For the Al Jazeera fellowship, which lasts for three months, positions for Arabic native speakers and non-Arabic speakers. If you are an Arabic native speaker, having a working knowledge of English will be an advantage. If you are not an Arabic speaker, you must be fluent in English. For the Visiting Journalist fellowship, which lasts for one month, you do not need to know Arabic.
Both programs support research projects that focus on digital journalism in the Arab world, in one of the following categories:
- Digital journalism,
- Journalism types, Journalistic ethics,
- Media and democracy,
- Challenges facing media organizations.
Priority is given to these topics because they are relevant and important for the development of journalism in the region.
You can work while on the fellowship program, but you must devote enough time to complete the research according to the standards and deadlines for each stage.
Deadline for Al Jazeera Fellowship
The application process for English speaking applicants to the Al Jazeera Fellowship Programme starts on the 17th of January, until the 30th of January 2024.
