American Studies Award (University) for German students 

American Studies Award Fulbright Germany is currently accepting applications from young german scholarships from the field of American studies. German society for American studies along with Fulbright Germany aims to promote academic work through the award program. They award young researchers to continue previously researched areas and do larger research in the USA. The research work must be in the postdoc phase or final phase of the doctorate. 

The award is for project-related research programs. The young scholar will stay in the USA and conduct research expanding professional networks. 

Who can Apply for an American Studies award?

Young German scholars from the field of American Studies can apply for the award. The American Studies Award is aimed at doctoral students in the final phase of their doctorate and postdoctoral researchers with the following research projects:

  • Work in connection with a habilitation
  • Work that relates to a book or research project in the postdoc phase
  • Research project in the final phase of the doctorate

The basic principles of Fulbright Germany include diversity, equal opportunities and inclusion. Therefore, the application is open to all people irrespective of gender, ethnic or social origin, social status, age, religion, color, skin color or other difference.  Other requirements includes:

  • Must be German citizen 
  • The program offers researchers the opportunity to conduct their scientific work at a German university or college and to pursue their research interests in the USA on site. 
  • The participants choose the American host institution(s) (universities, non-university research institutions, scientific archives or similar institutions) themselves and are responsible for coordinating and supervising the research project on site. After completing their stay in the USA, they return to their home institution in Germany. 
  • The participants are also in charge of arranging the transatlantic travel (flight booking, travel insurance, ESTA registration or visa application if needed, accommodation on site).

Benefit of the scholarship

The award consists of 10,000 euros, with 8,000 euros from Fulbright Germany and 2,000 euros from the DGfA. 

  • The prize money supports the research stay in the USA (travel, accommodation, insurance). The research project on the USA must be done in the USA between August 2024 and July 2025 for at least 6 weeks. 
  • Longer research work can be split into two USA trips (several weeks each). 
  • The award winners join Fulbright Germany’s network of scholars and alumni.

How to apply for the Award?

The applicants for the program can apply through DGFA website. The award winner is obliged to provide the DGfA with a final report on content and finances within six months of completing the research stay, which will forward it to Fulbright Germany.

  • Exposé of the planned research project in the USA
  • Schedule of the project
  • Financing plan
  • Invitation from the US host institution
  • Two academic reports
