Eligibility of British Academy Visiting fellowship 

To be eligible for the British Academy Visiting Fellowships Program, applicants must:

  • Be postdoctoral or have equivalent experience at the time of application.
  • Not be in the process of completing a PhD or awaiting viva/submission of corrections.
  • Be based outside the UK at the time of application.
  • Not conduct research related to the fellowship outside the UK, though short fieldwork trips abroad may be permitted.
  • Have a contract (permanent or fixed-term) that does not end before the fellowship concludes; independent scholars may apply.
  • Demonstrate prior contact with the UK host institution.

Eligible Regions: Open to all.


Application Process

The application process for the British Academy Visiting Fellowships Program involves:

  • Submitting the application electronically via the British Academy Flexi-Grant® Grant Management System.
  • Gaining approval from the chosen UK host institution.
  • Including the following in the application:
    • A personal statement detailing career background and research experience.
    • An abstract summarizing the proposed research.
    • A description of the research program, methodology, and timeline.
    • An explanation of the choice of UK host institution and the fellowship’s benefits.
    • A budget outlining expected costs, not exceeding £40,000, covering subsistence, accommodation, research, travel, and support for the UK host institution.
