DAAD Master’s Degree Scholarships for African students 2025

DAAD scholarship program ‘’Leadership for Africa’’ is inviting applications for Master’s programs from African students. The scholarship is for young refugees and scholars of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Uganda. The participants of the program will study at higher institutions in Germany. The DAAD scholarship aims to support the youth in their academics through fully funded programs. 

The Leadership for African program highly focuses on bright students to make change in the future. The students will complete their education, and return to african countries to further developments in their home. These scholarships are offered in all fields of study except for medicine, veterinary medicine, law, fine arts, dentistry and architecture.  

Besides the degree, the students will get training in good governance, civil society and career development.  It’s mandatory for the participants to  participate in these training programmes. It’s the best opportunity for the students to study for a Master’s degree in Germany on a fully funded scholarship. 

We always advise you to at least try for these opportunities, it is absolutely fine to go through the process, and learn something from the application process, even if you are not ready to believe you could win a scholarship. At least give it a try. 

What are the benefits of the DAAD scholarship Program ?

DAAD scholarship offers you a fully funded M.A or M.Sc degree program, German language course up to 6 months in Germany, and additional training designed specially for you. Besides, the program provides:

  • Monthly stipend of 934 Euros 
  • Cover your health costs, accident and private/personal liability insurance 
  • Allowance for travel 
  • Study allowance on yearly basis
  •  Monthly rent subsidy
  •  Monthly allowance for accompanying family members (spouse and/or children)

Eligibility criteria 

The DAAD scholaring targets two groups for leadership for africa. You must fulfill the criteria of any of the two groups. The criteria for the first group:

1) Highly qualified applicants who hold refugee status and fulfill the necessary qualifications for Master’s studies in Germany. Applicants must fulfill the following conditions:

  • Hold a refugee status in their host countries, being granted before 2nd of April, 2023
  • Country of asylum must be either Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, or Uganda
  • Completed Bachelor’s degree at the time of application

2) Highly qualified graduates from Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, or Uganda who fulfill the necessary qualifications for Master’s studies in Germany.

They must fulfill the following conditions:

  • Citizenship of either Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, or Uganda
  • Country of residence is Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, or Uganda
  • Completed Bachelor’s degree at the time of application

Documents requirement 

The following documents are required to be submitted for DAAD scholarship 2024:

  • DAAD online application form duly completed (available on official portal)
  • Curriculum Vitae ( max.3 pages) 
  • Letter of Motivation (1-3 pages) 
  • DAAD Form 
  • Proof of Language proficiency for desired master’s program (German or English)
  • University Degree certificates 
  • Transcripts of records 
  • Copies of passport/national identification Card
  • For refugees : Refugee ID-Card and UNHCR registration or official proof of Asylum 

Also include other documents that you believe are important for your application such as proof of internship, work experience, extracurricular engagement etc. 

Deadline for DAAD scholarship 

The last date to apply for ‘’Leadership for Africa 2025’’ DAAD scholarship program is 7th June, 2024. 

How to Apply for a DAAD scholarship?

The eligible country students can submit their applications via the DAAD portal. The applications can be submitted online. Follow the following steps to submit your application.

  • Go on DAAD official Portal Clicking the link below ‘’Apply Now’’ 
  • Register with DAAD portal using active email address 
  • Once you create your account login and access the application 
  • Download the application form and complete it
  • Prepare the required documents (Translate either in english or German language if requires )
  • Scan the application form and documents and save in PDF format 
  • Upload all the documents following the instructions (your application, transcripts, degrees, certificates )
  • Submit the the application online before the deadline
