Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program for India

Fulbright India is accepting applications for Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program. The program offers scholarships to  early-career English teachers or a young professional in a related field. The Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program offers an opportunity to refine your teaching skills, and enhance your English language proficiency.

The U.S Department of State sponsors the program and provides you an opportunity to work in a rich culture in the USA. Its nine-month, non-degree program is designed to promote cultural understanding and exchange between India and the United States. You will also find a number of programs sponsored by the U.S State department for education. These scholarships are for masters program, exchange and other professionals to develop their career.

The Fulbright FLTA Program is more than just a teaching assignment. It is a transformative experience that allows you to share your own cultural heritage while gaining a deeper understanding of American society and values. As a selected participant, you will have the chance to teach Hindi at various campuses in the U.S., while also enrolling in at least two courses, one of which must focus on American studies.

Dual Roles, Endless Opportunities

During your time in the U.S., you will assume a dual role – that of a teaching assistant and a student. Through engaging in cultural events and community outreach projects, you will have the opportunity to share your own cultural traditions and perspectives with the host communities. Furthermore, promoting mutual understanding between India and the United States.

Program Benefits and Responsibilities

As a Fulbright FLTA Program participant, you will receive;

  • a monthly stipend, 
  • health insurance, 
  • Tuition fee for two courses
  • travel support to your host institution in the United States. 

In return, you will be expected to teach up to two Hindi language classes per semester, as well as facilitate cultural events and engage in community outreach activities. 

This dual role of teaching assistant and student requires a high level of energy, self-reliance, and the ability to maintain excellent relationships with faculty, staff, and students.

Eligibility Criteria for Foreign Language Teaching Assistant

To be eligible for the Fulbright FLTA Program, you must fulfill the following criteria below, 

  •  Must be an Indian citizen with a strong academic and professional background. 
  • A master’s degree in fields such as English language, American literature, American studies, linguistics, or comparative literature is required
  • prior teaching experience is preferred.

The application process is comprehensive, requiring you to submit a range of documents. These documents include: 

  • Reference letters,
  • Academic transcripts, 
  • A resume, and 
  • a cultural ambassador statement. 

Additionally, you will need to demonstrate a high level of English proficiency, with a minimum TOEFL score of 79-80 or its equivalent. Though, at the application stage, you are not required to submit an English Proficiency certificate, if you do not have any.

  • Gather and prepare the required documents, including reference letters, academic transcripts, and a copy of your valid passport (if available).
  • Responses to the short-answer questions, highlighting your teaching methodologies, cultural ambassador objectives, and motivation for the program.
  • Ensure that all information provided is authentic and free from plagiarism, as any discrepancies may result in the termination of your application or the grant.
