Fully Funded MEXT Japanese Government scholarship is open for applications. The Ministry of Education, culture, sports, science and technology offers these scholarships to international students in multiple fields. The students of any country who has diplomatic relations with Japan can apply for these scholarships. The MEXT scholarship program offers an opportunity for international students to pursue graduate studies at Japanese universities as Research Students. 

MEXT Scholarship is available for undergraduate, masters, PhD and training studies. The program fully covers the student’s tuition fee, provides accommodation, takes care of monthly allowance and airfare travel from home country. Eligibility Criteria for MEXT scholarship 2025 

To apply for MEXT scholarships you must fulfill the following criteria given below, 

• born on or after April 2, 1989.
• Your country must have diplomatic relations with Japan (Almost all countries have)
• Good English proficiency skills 
• Be in good physical and mental condition 
• To apply for undergraduate, you must be at least 17 and under 25 years of age and have completed 12 years of school education or have completed courses in a school comparable to a high school (includes prospective graduates)
• For a Masters / PhD program, you must be under 35 years of age and a college graduate (includes prospective graduates). Or you must have completed 16 years / 18 years of education.
• For Teacher training students: under 35 years of age and a graduate of a college or teacher training college. You must have at least five years of active experience as a teacher in a primary, secondary or teacher training college in your country.

• Your Degree and Transcripts must be verified with official stamps:
  • For Bachelors program :12 Years of Education
  • For Master’s program applicants: Bachelor’s degree
  • For Ph.D. program applicants: Master’s degree

Note: If your degree is not in English language, a notarized copy of a translation in English is mandatory. 

• Two recommendation letters: Written by the applicant’s teachers/advisors/employers (who can evaluate academic performance and research potential) in English.
• Passport Scan(only if available)
• Curriculum Vitae
• Photographs of you
• Study plan / Statement of purpose: Research students must compose this document in English, detailing their motivation for application, educational and research background, as well as outlining their prospective study at APU.
• English Language Proficiency Document: Students who attended an English-language institute can submit an English Proficiency Certificate from their Home University, exempting them from the Language Test.
• Academic thesis or relevant publications (for research students): Required for research students, submission of academic thesis or relevant publications is necessary.
• Other reference documents (if applicable)

Deadline

Check the deadlines for the scholarship through your embassy. The deadline varies from embassy to embassy. You can find a list of Embassies of Japan here. For example, the deadline for Pakistani students is 10th May 2024 (for Research scholarship Masters and Phd) whereas for the students of India, the deadline is 3rd May, 2024 (Research/Masters Course/Ph.D. course). Therefore, check the deadline  with your home country embassy.

The application for MEXT Scholarship is through an online Portal. It follows two phases. In the first phase, the embassy of Japan in your home country will conduct the first screening. In the second phase, MEXT in Japan will conduct screening of applications. Therefore, you must carefully submit your application.
