Google Summer of Code 2024 contributor Program for students 

Google Summer of Code is inviting applications for 2024 from contributors. It is a paid, remote summer program that is open to all international students. Google Summer of Code is also known as GSoC. It is a virtual 12-week program that aims to bring new contributors to open-source software development. GSoC has united  almost 20,000 open source contributors from all over the globe. The contributors represent 116 companies, and 19,000 mentors from  at least 850 open source organizations.

For this year, the Google Summer of Code theme for the projects is artificial intelligence, security, and machine learning. And there are three project sizes (time commitments) available: 90 hours, 175 hours, and 350 hours. The project provides a very good stipend for the contributors. However, the stipend will be determined based on your project size. 

Contributors who successfully pass their evaluations will receive stipends ranging from $1,500 – $6,000 USD (for US-based contributors), depending on the project size and Google practices PPP (purchase power parity), so this range can also vary depending on where you reside. How to Apply for the Program?

First, you’ll want to check out the list of organizations that participate in Google Summer of Code. They have search tools to help you find the right fit. You can look for organizations based on the programming languages they use and the types of projects they offer. Once you’ve browsed a bit, pick 2 to 4 organizations that seem interesting.  These organizations will usually have a list of project ideas they’re looking for students to work on. 

The most important step though, is to contact the organizations you’re interested in. Their contact information will be listed on the GSoC site. It’s really important to chat with them about your proposal idea before the application deadline. Talking to them beforehand shows you’re interested and increases your chances of getting accepted into the program. Applicants can register for the program through the official website.
