About the Scholarship program

The LfA Scholarship Programme aims to academically empower future leaders from South Sudan and Uganda. The program is especially for those impacted by displacement and conflict. It offers scholarships to pursue tuition-free master’s degrees in Germany. The scholarship prepares scholars to contribute to the development of their countries and the African continent at large.

Eligibility Criteria for leadership for Africa scholarship

The program targets two main applicant groups:

Refugees

  • Must hold refugee status granted before 2 April 2024 in South Sudan or Uganda.
  • Status must be valid at least until April 2026.
  • Must hold a completed bachelor’s degree by the time of application.

Nationals of South Sudan or Uganda

  • Must have citizenship and residency in either South Sudan or Uganda.
  • Must hold a completed bachelor’s degree by the time of application

Note: Applicants with degrees in Medicine may only apply for Public Health or Biomedical Master’s programs.

What Does the Scholarship Cover?

This is a fully funded scholarship that includes:

  • German language course (up to 6 months) in Germany
  • Monthly stipend of €992
  • Full tuition coverage for M.A./M.Sc. degree programs at public or recognized institutions
  • Travel allowance
  • Yearly study allowance
  • Health, accident, and liability insurance
  • Accommodation and pocket money during the language course
  • Additional rent subsidy and family allowance (if applicable)

Note: Family reunification may be delayed due to visa processing timeframes.

Selection Process

The selection takes place in two stages:

  1. Preselection based on submitted documents
  2. Interview with an independent academic selection committee (held digitally)
