Scholarships for MSc & Research MSc in Water and Sustainable Development

IHE Delft Institute for Water Education offers scholarships for MSc and Research MSc in Water and Sustainable Development. If you are passionate about tackling future water challenges, this program will help you get there. You can build your career in water science, governance, or sustainable development. The duration of these programs is two years. 

Considering the challenges of climate change, these programs can be impactful for the future. The IHE Delft Water and Development Partnership Programme is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Meanwhile, there are other scholarships offered by different organizations. 

There are full and partial scholarships available. The full scholarships include the total cost of the MSc Programme in Water and Sustainable Development. It will cover your tuition fee, insurance, international travel costs and an allowance of EURO  1,220 per month for the cost of living and accommodation during the complete study period.

MSC in Water and Sustainable Development overview

There are two programs offered including:

MSc in Water and Sustainable Development (12 Months)

  • Duration: 12 months
  • Start Date: End of October 2025
  • Tuition Fee: €20,700 (excluding VAT)
  • Structure: Coursework-based with a final thesis
  • Ideal For: Early to mid-career professionals aiming to enhance their expertise in water-related fields

 Research MSc in Water and Sustainable Development (22 Months)

  • Duration: 22 months
  • Start Date: End of October 2025
  • Tuition Fee: €36,500 (excluding VAT)
  • Structure: Emphasizes independent research and self-study
  • Ideal For: Individuals aspiring to pursue a PhD or a research-oriented career

Admission Requirements for MSc in Water and Sustainable Development

Applicants for both programs should meet the following criteria:

  • A Bachelor’s degree equivalent to a B/B+ (US system) or upper second-class honors (UK system) in a relevant field.
  • Non-native English speakers must provide proof of proficiency through standardized tests (IELTS, TOEFL, etc.).
  • A well-articulated motivation statement addressing specific questions provided during the application process.
  • While not mandatory, relevant work experience is considered advantageous.

Application Timeline

The application period for the program is from 1 November 2024 – 1 July 2025 and the Scholarship Application deadline is 1 June 2025.

Early application is highly recommended, especially for those applying for scholarships.

Scholarships & Financial Aid

IHE Delft offers several scholarships to support students financially. These are awarded based on merit, need, and program fit.

 Full Scholarships

  • Water and Development Partnership Programme
    Covers tuition, insurance, travel, and living expenses for selected students.
  • WWF Food Systems Fellowship
    Supports research-focused students from specific countries working on food-water nexus.
  • WMO Fellowships
    Available for students from developing countries recommended by their national meteorological service.

💸 Partial Scholarships

Delft Blue Scholarships

  • Water Leader Scholarship: 50% tuition reduction for MSc students.
  • Top Water Scientist Scholarship: 50% tuition reduction for Research MSc students.
  • Regular Delft Blue Scholarship: 35% tuition reduction for both programs.

Hardship Scholarship

  • 25% tuition reduction for MSc students facing financial difficulties.

Applicants must demonstrate the ability to cover remaining costs.
