OWSD Early Career Fellowship For Women  

OWSD Early Career Fellowship program for 2024 is open for applications.The fellowship program accepts applications from women who have completed their Phds in the fields of science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Besides, they must be working at an academic or scientific research institution in one of the 66 countries  listed under Science and Technology Lagging Countries(STLSc) mentioned at the end of this article.

During the fellowship program, the OWSD early career fellows are expected to maintain an international standard of research. Meanwhile, attract other scholarships from around the globe to collaborate with them. International Development Research Centre (IDRC),Canada supports OWSD Early career fellowship with generous funds. 

The application is online and must be fulfilled in English Language. However, if you want to send any document such as residency certificate or degree in your local Language, you must attach at least an informa translation into English. Documents without English translation will not be accepted. 

Previously, OWSD Early Career fellowship was for 36 months. Now the duration of the fellowship has been minimized to only 24 months. 

What is the purpose of the fellowship program?

OWSD Early career fellowship program aims to support women in STEM. Its objective is to provide an opportunity to women scientists from countries lacking scientific and technological resources to lead research projects.  The fellows of this program will undertake their research in one of the eligible countries. 

During the fellowship, they will build strong leaders and managment skills, build networking with various public and private partners. This will help them to convert their research into marketable products. Also, these fellow women scientists will be role models for the next generation of women in STEM. 

Benefits of the fellowship Program

  • The fellowship program provides funds to USD 50,000 for 2 years. 
  • Initial advance payment of 33% of the total grant value 
  • Reimburse expenses made with funds advanced by the administering institution 
  • Direct procurement done by the OWSD secretariate on fellow’s behalf (only purchases above USD 4,500)
  • Additional support for Two Training workshops 

List of eligible expenses includes: 

  • Research related costs such as equipments, consumables, research visits, exchanges, and programs, teaching and Assistance, field work, information resources, IT facilities, training and other
  • Linking with industry and other partners
  • Outreach, communication and Networking

  • Computing and Information Technology
  • Engineering Sciences

  • Structural, Cell and Molecular Biology

Research project proposals from other fields (social science, education, etc.) are not eligible. 

Eligibility Criteria for the fellowship

Applicants must meet following criteria below, 

  • Phd in one of the fields mentioned above( Phd award not more than 10 years prior to application)
  • Must be a citizen of Science and Technology lagging countries and reside in the country for at least 5 years. These years do not have to be consecutive. 
  • Must provide proof of being employed at the university or research institute at the time of application where the research project will be carried out. If not employed yet, share proof of employment offer and confirmation of acceptance. 
  • The institution where the research project will be carried out must be in one of the listed STLCs.
  • Applicants must provide evidence that they will receive a salary from their university/research institute for the duration of the two-year fellowship.

  • Supporting documents of head of applicant’s institution 
  • Budget file 
  • Additional documents (Certificate of awards, memberships etc)
